Tottenham defender Juan Foyth has revealed the chance to work with his compatriot Mauricio Pochettino swayed his decision to join the north London club over Paris Saint-Germain.

The 21-year-old Argentine joined Spurs in August 2017 from Estudiantes for a reported £8m, with the centre-back making 17 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring once.

Spurs however weren’t the only club chasing him, with Ligue 1 side PSG also interested in the sought-after defender, however the opportunity to learn from a former centre-back in Pochettino was too good to turn down, according to Foyth.

Speaking to ESPN, he said: “More than anything I decided on Tottenham because there was an Argentinian manager and support team — or they can [at least] speak Spanish — and because it was a club that supported young players a lot.

“Also, I had the chance to talk to Mauricio and he told me I had very good features but that he was going to improve that. He was a defender as well so I thought he might have very good recommendations and advice to give me.”

It hasn’t been easy for Foyth since arriving at Tottenham, with the defender left out of the Champions League squad this season during the group stages, before being added for the upcoming knockout stages.

The Argentine also endured a difficult Premier League debut against Wolves this season, when he gave away two penalties during a 3-2 win at Molineux, although Foyth praised Pochettino for the support he showed him following the game.

Foyth added: “He [Pochettino] told me it’s a situation he had been in. It happens, so I think he could understand in that sense because he’d been out there, in that same position as me.”
